Why Early Concussion Care Matters

Why Early Concussion Care Matters

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI). Unlike more severe brain injuries, a concussion changes the way the brain functions rather than showing up as bleeding or fracture on imaging — which is exactly why expert evaluation matters. Symptoms can range from mild to debilitating and may not appear until hours or days after the injury.

Research shows patients who are not seen by a concussion specialist within the first week after injury are nearly 10 times more likely to have a prolonged recovery. If you suspect a concussion, don't wait — and if symptoms have lingered from an older injury, those can be treated too.

Common concussion symptoms include:

  • Headache and pressure in the head

  • Dizziness, balance problems, or nausea

  • Sensitivity to light or noise

  • Brain fog, trouble concentrating, or memory problems

  • Sleep disturbance and fatigue

  • Irritability, anxiety, or mood changes

Impact Testing at Aptiva Health

ImPACT Testing — Baseline & Post-Injury

Aptiva Health uses the ImPACT testing program, a computerized neurocognitive assessment used widely in sports medicine. We offer it two ways:

  • Baseline testing — completed before an injury (ideal for athletes), establishing each person's normal cognitive function.

  • Post-injury testing — completed after a suspected concussion and compared to the baseline (or to normative data) to measure impact and track recovery.

Comparing baseline and post-injury results gives our specialists an objective tool to guide return-to-learn and return-to-play decisions safely.
